The Other Side of the Tracks: A Socially Speaking commentary

Can you believe the stupidity of the people who call themselves “true Americans?”  Year after year, they fight against the people whom they are—the working class—by supporting big corporations that take from them.  15 years ago, it was Levis, then Fruit of the Loom, then it was Enron and today, it’s Hilton Hotels.

On October 6th Hilton Worldwide will close its reservation call center in Hemet, California- a move that will eliminate about 300 jobs.

The jobs paid workers between $9.50 and $12 an hour, according to the Press-Enterprise, which has been covering the story. In a statement to the paper, Hilton said the move was “a difficult decision.”

Hilton announced the closure – rumored for months on Internet message boards, blogs and among employees – to city officials and employees earlier this month, says the paper, which also posted a short video about the news.

There are people that champion capitalism today, though it cuts the throats of the very people they purport to represent.  This position is insanity.  Free and open markets and the freedom to do whatever brings your business the most profit is what they trumpet; yet that posture has bent this country over.  Those people rail against those of us who want to preserve American jobs and keep money in the pockets of Americans.  Their free market position keeps American children in poverty and instability.  These are the same people who stood by the destruction of labor unions (i.e., the protection of American jobs).

The insanity is even greater an insult to the workers in the actual call center.  The Press-Enterprise’s latest story says that employees of the Hemet reservation call center were sent to the Philippines to train agents at a new call center there about two months ago.

Hilton previously closed call centers in Illinois in 2008 and Pennsylvania last year, according to the Press-Enterprise. Some of the Pennsylvania workers had said they, too, went to the Philippines to train call-center workers, the paper says.  Why am I not surprised?  I worked for Whirlpool Corporation a decade ago, and I recall customers calling and telling me that they spoke with a representative the day before, but we couldn’t find it in our computers; upon further inquiry, the customer revealed that the rep they previously spoke to…was in India!

Don’t be fooled by the free-market capitalist supporters.  These are the same ones attacking President Obama’s attempts to preserve American jobs and award American companies for keeping their corporations on American soil—employing American workers.  If you don’t watch out, you’ll be training your replacement!
