The Tea Party Is On the Rampage

The Other Side of the Tracks: A Socially Speaking commentary

January 8, 2011

I am of the mind that our country is in the midst of a dramatic change—a change for the worst.  Race is at the center of this change.  Now that the Republicans have won back the House of Representatives—with the aid of the Tea Party—and with the extreme tactics of socio-political discourse.  This change isn’t pretty, nor is it going to legal.  There will be violent tactics used to scare disagreeing Americans into submitting to the neo-conservative ideology.  The bottom line is, the Tea Party is on the rampage.

No, I can’t say that the recent events of terrorism were committed by Tea Party members, but what I can say is that the Tea Party and their cohorts, like Sarah Palin, Rep. Michele Bachmann, House Speaker John Boehner and Rush Limbaugh, introduced language and innuendo suggesting a violent takeover of the government and a violent retaliation against supporters of liberal policies.  During the campaign of 2010, this was the norm, so it’s not surprising that we’re experiencing this rash of gun play and terrorism.

On Saturday, six people were killed and 12 others wounded — including a federal district court judge and U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords — in a shooting outside a Tucson, Arizona, grocery store where the congresswoman was holding a constituent meeting.  A 22-year old lone shooter is the perpetrator. Giffords is a Democrat.  The only thing Tea Partiers hate worse than Democrats is black people.  Then you may remember from last March: reports of death threats, vandalism and harassment had Democrats on edge as they were preparing to head home for their spring recess. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., who was one of the Democratic leaders targeted.

Then, this past week, a package addressed to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano (current Obama appointee) ignited in a District postal facility Friday, authorities said, a day after two similar parcels containing low-grade incendiary devices flashed in Maryland government buildings. Then there were packages sent to Maryland Governor, Martin O’ Malley…and you guessed it, he’s a Democrat.

The fact of the matter is, the right-wing have grown a new class of home-grown extremists that believe that disagreements are settled at the business end of a gun.  The assault on anti-gun laws by conservatives is to keep extremists legal as they commit the illegal.  The diversion is always an “ex-con.”  As I catalogue shootings over the past 5 ½  years, it appears that the ones that do the most damage and shock mainstream America the most often are the shootings committed by “law-abiding” citizens.

These people want blood.  They’re on the rampage.  They’ve never accepted that Obama won the presidency—and never will.  The antics aren’t over either.  It’s a new covert war, akin to subversive lynching; designed to scare the opposition to submitting their position.  Whether Healthcare Reform or abortion, these people cannot accept democracy in its truest form.  The Right wants to go back to “the Constitution as originally intended.” That’s why we must stay vigilant, persistent and in remembrance of “the good ol’ days,” because for some of us, they weren’t good.
